What’s next

I have just returned from my two week visit of John Baez’s group at UC Riverside, which was extremely nice and productive. I hope will be able to reveal some new insights soon.

Now I am about to go on vacation in Sweden. In March I will return from Östersund directly to Berlin to attend the annual DPG meeting where I give a short talk on 2-bundles and nonabelian strings.

Similar talks are due end of March at Problemi Attuali di Fisica Teorica in Vietri/Italy by kind invatation by Paolo Aschieri and end of April at the math or hep seminar at LMU in Munich, thanks to Branislav Jurčo and Ivo Sachs.

This is the rough schedule of the Vietri conference for March 24:

R.Zucchini - ‘A sigma model field theoretic realization of Hitchin’s generalized complex geometry’

M.Zabzine - ‘Generalized complex geometry and supersymmetry’

F.Bonechi - ‘Non perturbative Poisson Sigma model and Geometric quantization’

J.Michelsson - ‘Families of index theorem in supersymmetric WZW model and twisted K theory’

J.Evslin - ‘What K theory does and doesn’t classify’ (see also this)

U.Schreiber - ‘Nonabelian Strings’

T.Strobl - ‘Algebroid Yang-Mills Theories’

Many people seem to be interested in nonabelian strings and categorified gauge theory. If everything works out I’ll visit Zoran Skoda in Bonn in April or March to talk about these things.

FAQ about Vietri:

1) How can I go down to the castle there in the beach?

Answer:

a) The hotel in front of the road has a key for the beach, I am told. But given the time of the year, the school prefers to get rooms at the other hotel (see ‘b’).

b) Go to the bath area of “La Lucertola”, either external downstairs from the hotel itself, or by walking from the pub in the beach. Then short swimming across a couple of caves in the cliff.

Incidentally, the owners from a pizzeria at Zaragoza came from Vietri, time ago, but I didn’t know of it until I asked about a picture of the beach castlelet.

2) Can I keep swimming until Salerno?

answer: yep, short swimming, going down from the rocks you just reached in (1). Your problem is how to get a towel and some clothes.

3) Can I use the elevator from Salerno?

answer: No, you can not. It is reserved for clients of a third hotel (which is too far away from the school anyway).

Some corrections

I was assuming old school placement in Vietri. If finally the placement is alternated with Lloyd’s Baia Hotel, I think the following modification applies:

Vietri a la LucasGames

Wow, sounds like the solution to a computer adventure game! :-)

Thanks for the information! I’ll probably have one or two free days in Vietri and time to explore the town. From what I have seen on the internet it looks rather beautiful and I bet from the tower of a secret castle on the beach it will look so even more.

Have you been to Vietri yourself or do you know all this from your Zaragoza friends?

BTW, while walking through the Swedish winter woods I got some new ideas on categorified NCG which I am about to post to that SCT entry. Since you know a lot about NCG I will always be interested in hearing your opinion on these ideas.

Urs, I try to follow the Coffee table, as you can see; it is only that I am a bit lost around the categorification thing.

If not in Vietri, nearby at Naples you could probably find Fedele Lizzi and other friends who understand the math of NCG a lot better that me. Put them some pressure!

And yes, I had been in Vietri time ago, when the Hopf Algebra of differential calculus was exposed. But it just happened I crossed recently this summer; the ship from Valencia goes right to Salerno bay.

And yes, the whole town seems to come from LucasGames.
