Note:These pages make extensive use of the latest XHTML and CSS Standards. They ought to look great in any standards-compliant modern browser. Unfortunately, they will probably look horrible in older browsers, like Netscape 4.x and IE 4.x. Moreover, many posts use MathML, which is, currently only supported in Mozilla. itex2MML Plugin Update

A minor update to the itex2MML executable, used in my plugin. I added a few more MathML entities.

(Antonio Luis had a few more changes, but I think he was either working from an old version of the executable, or trying to work around some bugs in Mozilla that I’m not seeing here. I hope he’ll correct me if I missed something.)

Thanks for making daggers available, that should enliven the discussion! ;-)

I see over at the Coffee Table that Eric has tried to use $\star$, which was not recognized. Of course we could use $*$ instead of ☆ (☆). On the other hand I know that Eric very strongly feels that it is the Hodge star not the Hodge asterisk ;-)

There is, indeed, a MathML named entity, ☆. But it’s a 5-pointed white star (Unicode character ☆ ☆), which is probably not what he wanted. There’s also ★, which is a black (“filled”) 5-pointed star (Unicode character ★ ★), which is closer to the character designated by the LaTeX \star.

But then there’s also ⋆ (Unicode character &8902; ⋆), which — I think — is the one you really want.

Why don’t you edit his comment (and re-save your post) to see which one you think is correct.

Any five-point star would be fine I guess. I personally use the LaTeX \star. I hesitate to use \asterisk simply because occasionally you deal with C-star algebras and Hodge stars together and I like to use \asterisk for the star in C-star :) I think it is common to use \asterisk for C-star algebras.
I’ve seen authors using \star for Hodge star, so it is not very unusual.
