Note:These pages make extensive use of the latest XHTML and CSS Standards. They ought to look great in any standards-compliant modern browser. Unfortunately, they will probably look horrible in older browsers, like Netscape 4.x and IE 4.x. Moreover, many posts use MathML, which is, currently only supported in Mozilla. My best suggestion (and you will thank me when surfing an ever-increasing number of sites on the web which have been crafted to use the new standards) is to upgrade to the latest version of your browser. If that's not possible, consider moving to the Standards-compliant and open-source Mozilla browser.

Cobordism and Topological Field Theories Week 2

Posted by Alexander Hoffnung

Welcome to week 2 of the cobordism and TFT seminar at UCR. This is the first of a series of lectures given by Julie Bergner (with occasional stand-ins by others). The previous lecture was an introductory lecture given by John Baez found here. This week’s lecture introduces cobordisms and oriented manifolds.

Here is the new lecture. I will start posting more soon.

I think if you include a question in each new post about this seminar, you’ll get more comments.

Also: describe the funniest thing that happened in the seminar each week!

Well, I am keeping quiet at this stage because this last lecture was still covering familiar material for most n-category cafe patrons (the cobordism category). When we start hitting the Lurie stuff, I’ll be on much shakier ground and I’ll need to ask questions.

Good ideas. I was planning on doing something to spark conversation, but had not figured out what yet.
