Note:These pages make extensive use of the latest XHTML and CSS Standards. They ought to look great in any standards-compliant modern browser. Unfortunately, they will probably look horrible in older browsers, like Netscape 4.x and IE 4.x. Moreover, many posts use MathML, which is, currently only supported in Mozilla. My best suggestion (and you will thank me when surfing an ever-increasing number of sites on the web which have been crafted to use the new standards) is to upgrade to the latest version of your browser. If that's not possible, consider moving to the Standards-compliant and open-source Mozilla browser.

Categorification in Faro

Posted by John Baez

This year’s Oporto Meeting is about categorification! This year it will not take place in Oporto. It will be in the city of Faro, which in is the southernmost region of Portugal, called the Algarve:

Here’s the conference announcement:

Dear all,

This is the second announcement of the XIXth Oporto Meeting on Geometry, Topology and Physics, which will take place in Faro, Portugal, from July 19 to July 23, 2010. The main theme this year is Categorification and our main speakers are Sabin Cautis, Mikhail Khovanov, Aaron Lauda, Catharina Stroppel, Dylan Thurston and Ben Webster, who each will give a short lecture course on a particular topic within Categorification.

Additional funding has become available for students and postdocs, who need financial support. On the new on-line registration form there is therefore space for a request for financial support. People who registered already don’t need to register again, but can send us a message requesting support, if needed. It is important to register soon if you need financial support, since our increased budget remains finite of course. Note that there is also room for contributed talks and people who register can give us a title and abstract (on the on-line registration form), which we will consider.

For more details (watch the deadlines, please!) please see our website.

Hope to see you in July,

Marco Mackaay, Roger Picken and Pedro Vaz,
On behalf of the organization.
