Note:These pages make extensive use of the latest XHTML and CSS Standards. They ought to look great in any standards-compliant modern browser. Unfortunately, they will probably look horrible in older browsers, like Netscape 4.x and IE 4.x. Moreover, many posts use MathML, which is, currently only supported in Mozilla. My best suggestion (and you will thank me when surfing an ever-increasing number of sites on the web which have been crafted to use the new standards) is to upgrade to the latest version of your browser. If that's not possible, consider moving to the Standards-compliant and open-source Mozilla browser.

Research Fellowships at Macquarie University

Posted by Emily Riehl

A little bird tells me that Macquarie University is hiring (even more) category theorists!

Specifically, they are offering two-year research fellowship positions, details of which can be found here.

Macquarie University, which is in greater Sydney, is the home for Centre of Australian Category Theory. As I’m sure many nn-Café readers can attest, it’s a wonderful place to visit, to live, and to work. Applications are due in January.

Re: Research Fellowships at Macquarie University

The job advertisement is long and rambling, but the key sentence is probably:

Applications from candidates with expertise in the areas of quasicategory theory or Hopf algebra theory are particularly encouraged.

and probably not:

Encouraged to think boldly, and supported by some of Australia’s most outstanding facilities, brilliant minds converge in our Faculty to create incredible new possibilities: the world’s first attempt to synthesize complex life, the creation of Wi-Fi, the discovery of dancing dwarf galaxies, and the development of blue LED light.

Re: Research Fellowships at Macquarie University

The announcement says

The successful candidate will work on the Australian Research Council Discovery Projects Grant: DP160101519: “Monoidal categories and beyond: new contexts and new applications”

but it is hard to find online more details on this project beyond the very abstract:

The project aims to develop a theory of generalised monoidal structures with applications to fields as diverse as combinatorics, representation theory, algebraic geometry, topology, theoretical physics and computer science. Monoidal categories are a mathematical formalism for systems with operations of parallel and serial composition, such as the Hilbert space model of quantum mechanics. Recent developments in topology and quantum algebra have led to more general notions of monoidal category, and further progress requires a comprehensive theory of such structures.

Re: Research Fellowships at Macquarie University

Zoran,

the details of ARC DPs are not generally made public, though they usually contain a wealth of detail/talking through one’s hat as required by the application process. It would be nice if the practice of making the technical portions of grant applications public were more widespread (to any Macquarie people passing by: wink, wink)
