Note:These pages make extensive use of the latest XHTML and CSS Standards. They ought to look great in any standards-compliant modern browser. Unfortunately, they will probably look horrible in older browsers, like Netscape 4.x and IE 4.x. Moreover, many posts use MathML, which is, currently only supported in Mozilla. My best suggestion (and you will thank me when surfing an ever-increasing number of sites on the web which have been crafted to use the new standards) is to upgrade to the latest version of your browser. If that's not possible, consider moving to the Standards-compliant and open-source Mozilla browser.

Magnitude Workshop, Edinburgh, July 2019

Posted by Tom Leinster

There are always many reasons to visit Edinburgh, especially in the summer (with the world’s largest arts festival). But there are more reasons than ever this summer: not only are we offering Category Theory 2019, but we’re also running a workshop on magnitude. It’s on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 July 2019, which are the two weekdays immediately before the category theory meeting.

Recently there have been big steps forward in the theory of magnitude — with some major analytical coups (like these ones) on the one hand, and, on the other, the birth of magnitude homology and cohomology and results about its relationship with persistent homology. That’s in addition to existing connections with algebra, graph theory, and the measurement of biodiversity.

At least 22 authors have now written papers on magnitude. It’s time to bring these people together into the same room! We’re delighted to announce that many of them have agreed to take part in the workshop, including:

  • Tony Carbery (Edinburgh)
  • Christina Cobbold (Glasgow)
  • Heiko Gimperlein (Heriot-Watt)
  • Magnus Goffeng (Gothenburg)
  • Kiyonori Gomi (Shinshu)
  • Richard Hepworth (Aberdeen)
  • Tom Leinster (Edinburgh)
  • Nikoletta Louca (Edinburgh/Heriot-Watt)
  • Mark Meckes (Case Western)
  • Nina Otter (UCLA/Max Planck Leipzig)
  • Emily Roff (Edinburgh)
  • Shilan Salim (Sheffield)
  • Mike Shulman (San Diego)
  • Jakub Stocek (Edinburgh/Heriot-Watt)
  • Simon Willerton (Sheffield)
  • Masahiko Yoshinaga (Hokkaido)

The organizers are Heiko Gimperlein, Magnus Goffeng, and me. If you’re interested in taking part too, please get in touch with any of us.
