Note:These pages make extensive use of the latest XHTML and CSS Standards. They ought to look great in any standards-compliant modern browser. Unfortunately, they will probably look horrible in older browsers, like Netscape 4.x and IE 4.x. Moreover, many posts use MathML, which is, currently only supported in Mozilla. My best suggestion (and you will thank me when surfing an ever-increasing number of sites on the web which have been crafted to use the new standards) is to upgrade to the latest version of your browser. If that's not possible, consider moving to the Standards-compliant and open-source Mozilla browser.

Posted by Tom Leinster

Guest post by Tobias Fritz, Rory Lucyshyn-Wright, and Paolo Perrone

As many of you will already know, we are organizing the workshop Categorical Probability and Statistics, which will take place online over the upcoming weekend, June 5–8.

The goal is to provide a platform for exchange of results and ideas between the various communities who pursue categorical approaches to probability and statistics. The talks will be hosted on Zoom and accompanied by discussions in a chat forum. The final schedule of the talks is available under the link above.

Our speakers come from a range of fields, including category theory, computer science, statistics, as well as noncommutative and quantum probability:

  • Malte Gerhold
  • Bart Jacobs
  • Hông Vân Lê
  • Peter McCullagh
  • Annabelle McIver
  • Prakash Panangaden
  • Evan Patterson
  • Arthur Parzygnat
  • Paolo Perrone
  • Eigil Fjeldgren Rischel
  • Alex Simpson
  • Robert W. Spekkens
  • Bas Spitters
  • David Spivak
  • Sam Staton

To register and receive the links to our live Zoom session and our discussion forum, please get in touch by email. If you are already on the category theory forum on the Zulip chat, then just leave a message here.

We’re happy to be able to offer also the following introductory video tutorials as a lead-up to the workshop:

Special thanks to Christine, Paolo and Sam for making these. Each one also has its own topic on the forum for questions and discussion.

We look forward to seeing you at the workshop.

The post has been updated to include the list of video tutorials, which are already up on YouTube. They’re intended as background knowledge for anyone who wants to get up to speed on those topics.

I’ll be at the workshop myself and I’m looking forward to it!

By the way, huge congratulations to Tobias for landing a tenure track position! He’s joining the maths department at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, this coming autumn.

More specifically, he’ll be a member of the algebra group.

Congratulations, Tobias!

Ha, you totally surprised me there! I was going to comment saying thank you for the main post, but now it’s thank you for both posts :) And also thanks to my future department for my post there.
