Note:These pages make extensive use of the latest XHTML and CSS Standards. They ought to look great in any standards-compliant modern browser. Unfortunately, they will probably look horrible in older browsers, like Netscape 4.x and IE 4.x. Moreover, many posts use MathML, which is, currently only supported in Mozilla. My best suggestion (and you will thank me when surfing an ever-increasing number of sites on the web which have been crafted to use the new standards) is to upgrade to the latest version of your browser. If that's not possible, consider moving to the Standards-compliant and open-source Mozilla browser.

Musical Interlude II

Time for another peak into the contents of my iPod.

William Elliott Whitmore may sound like a grizzled old-timer from Appalachia. Try to pretend that you don’t know he’s really a goateed thirty-something from Lee County Iowa. Here’s one of his more upbeat songs “Dry”

You need the Flash Player installed.

The name of the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is a mind-trip, even before you hear the music. Here’s their version of Juan Tizol’s “Caravan,” (the bebop standard):

Yow!

I can’t resist offering you another. Here’s their “Stroke of Fate”

You need the Flash Player installed.

To round things out, let’s close with the melancholy “Mar Azul”, by the barefoot diva from Cap Verde, Cesária Évora:

You need the Flash Player installed.

Re: Musical Interlude II

Thanks for links to the music, which is interesting. Do you speak Japanese?

Re: Musical Interlude II

Wow, I speak Portuguese reasonably well but I can hardly make out a word of Mar Azul.

Mar Azul

Cap Verdean creole, I expect.

For what it’s worth, here are the lyrics (by B. Léza)

O Mar,
Deta quitinho, bô dixam bai
Bô dixam bai spia nha terra
Bô dixam bai salva nha Mãe...
O Mar, Mar azul, subi mansinho Lua cheia lumiam caminho Pam ba nha terra di meu São Vicente pequinino, Pam ba braça nha cretcheu. Oh... Mar, anô passá tempo corrê Sol raiá, lua sai A mi ausente na terra longe... O Mar...

Re: Musical Interlude II

btw, now that IE8’s out, you can probably remove (or at least version-qualify) the MathML warning that you get when you hit your page.

MathML Warning

I don’t see why the MathML warning should change.

The subsequent editorial warning about IE’s Standards Support may, perhaps, be a little harsh, when applied to IE8. On the other hand, I now use a fair amount of inline SVG (in other posts). Since that (unlike MathML) is supported by all the major browsers except IE (including IE8), some such warning is still warranted.
