Note:These pages make extensive use of the latest XHTML and CSS Standards. They ought to look great in any standards-compliant modern browser. Unfortunately, they will probably look horrible in older browsers, like Netscape 4.x and IE 4.x. Moreover, many posts use MathML, which is, currently only supported in Mozilla. My best suggestion (and you will thank me when surfing an ever-increasing number of sites on the web which have been crafted to use the new standards) is to upgrade to the latest version of your browser. If that's not possible, consider moving to the Standards-compliant and open-source Mozilla browser.

Tensor Categories and TQFT in Erlangen

Posted by John Baez

There’s a meeting in Erlangen coming up!

Structures on Tensor Categories and Topological Field Theories, Department Mathematik, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erlangen, March 4-6, 2014, organized by Catherine Meusburger and Christoph Schweigert.

This is a three day learning event on recent developments in (extended) topological field theories. The focus is the interplay of structures on tensor categories and topological field theories, including structures related to non-semisimple categories.

The idea is not to have yet another workshop or conference but to study these topics in depth, with a schedule more like the one of an Oberwolfach workshop, with a lecture series and plenty of time for discussions. It will include a lecture series by Christopher Schommer-Pries on topological field theories and the underlying categorical structures.

Speakers include:

  • Bruce Bartlett, Oxford University
  • Alain Bruguières, Université Montpellier II
  • Thomas Kerler, Ohio State University
  • Michael Mueger*, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen
  • Christopher Schommer-Pries, Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, Bonn
  • Noah Snyder*, Columbia University
  • Alexis Virelizier*, Université Lille I

* to be confirmed.

Re: Tensor Categories and TQFT in Erlangen

Yes! Alas, though I’m basically in Erlangen until mid-May, I’ll be on a side-trip to Oxford during this meeting… while Bruce Bartlett, who is in Oxford, will go to Erlangen.

Though I’ve retired from the TQFT business, I’ve been having fun here talking to Catherine Meusburger and my (former) student Derek Wise about 3d Turaev–Viro models and their relation to Levin–Wen models. Maybe I’ll blog a bit about what they’re doing.

Right, the timing isn’t exactly perfect!!

I’d be really interested to hear what Catherine and Derek are doing.
